Michael Byram

Professor Emeritus at the University of Durham, United Kingdom, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Michael Byram is Professor Emeritus at the University of Durham (UK) and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He ‘read’ Modern and Medieval Languages at King’s College, University of Cambridge (UK), completed a PhD in Danish literature, and then taught French and German in secondary and adult education. He was at Durham University from 1980 engaged in teacher training, research student supervision, and research on languages and education.

After retirement from Durham, he has held several visiting professorships and is currently Guest Research Professor, Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, where he is involved in a comparative study of doctoral education.

His monographs include Teaching and Assessing Intercultural Communicative Competence - Revisited and From Foreign Language Education to Education for Intercultural Citizenship. He has also edited several volumes, most recently The Experience of ‘Defending’ the Doctoral Dissertation. International Comparative Studies of the Final Oral Examination with Maria Stoicheva.
